Forensic Hard Drive Scrub

Forensic Hard Drive Scrub

A Hard Drive Scrub is perhaps the safest and most assured way to permanently remove information from a hard drive without damaging the drive. YBC utilizes a forensic “HD SCRUB” that overwrites data in full compliance with DoD 5220.22-M . It utilizes a layered method of overwriting data using a sequence of nulls (Binary O’s) randomly generated characters, alternating characters, or user definable fixed characters in any sequence. Our HD Scrub overwrites every sector and every cluster, down to every byte of information on the hard drive. The process can also be customized to capture the make, model and serial number of each drive scrubbed. This method of overwriting information is far superior to an FDISK or FORMAT process. The FDISK procedure only resets the hard drive’s partition table. Every FDISK is followed by a FORMAT. FORMAT only re-writes the File Allocation Table. When an FDISK or FORMAT is done the address (File Allocation Table) of the information on the hard drive is removed, not the actual information. HD Scrub actually overwrites the information itself. If the original information is overwritten it no longer exists. As an extra measure of redundancy our HD Scrub will allow for as many as 999 overwrites and also reports on bad sectors and the type of information residing in the bad sector: *Note: To permanently erase data following the DOD 5220.22-M 3-pass standard on a 100GB Hard Drive requires approximately 2-3 hours.

Physical Destruction:

Drives that cannot be securely scrubbed of data due to malfunctioning controllers or bad hard drives go through YBC's degaussing and shredding process. Data is not overwritten or erased; Data is either demagnetized or shredded. These processes are performed on ALL drives that no longer work. The remains are recycled following all State, Local, and Federal guidelines. A certificate is issued to YBC clients for all recycled products.
